With the first birthday over, and Shamus' parents gone on Sunday morning, things got back to normal a bit. We did first birthday pictures on Sunday afternoon, and Hunter totally didn't cooperate. I think that the flash was bothering his eyes and he was just generally a little grumpy. At one point, we were doing some pictures of him in the grass and a bee (or wasp) landed in his hair and was walking around. That was exciting. We will see if we get any good photos, but it wasn't for a lack of trying!
He's also very into the toilet right now. If the lid isn't closed, he wants to stick his hand in there and play with the water. So gross...even if it's clean! So we have to make sure that the lids are down or the bathroom doors are closed. He's also discovered the joy of the roll of toilet paper. We had a roll that was almost empty thankfully, and he rolled that down and played with it. He is into everything!
Ever since he learned the amazingness that are balloons, he wants them! We had them at his party, and he just wants to suck and chew on them. We ended up taking them away because I knew they were going to pop in his face. That would suck, plus he could choke on them, too. On Tuesday, I took him to the grocery store, and he saw the balloons at the check out lines. Holy moly. He was going crazy and squealing and kept trying to get out of the cart to get the balloons. Crazy kid. It was funny and cute. For me. It was frustrating for him.
I think he's losing some of his mommy-ness this week, which makes me sad. He was lunging for all the grandparents this week, and when I picked him up from daycare he cried when I took him from Kathleen. He used to jump into my arms, but he pretty much wanted nothing to do with me. Jerk. It totally hurt my feelings, but I told Shamus and he said, try dealing with this every day for the past year. Yeah maybe, but I'm the mom!
I took Hunter to the doctor on Monday for his one-year check. I was surprised! He only weighed in at 19 pounds, 4 ounces. I thought for sure that he was 20 or 21 pounds by now. He's in the 20th percentile in his weight, so tiny, but the doctor wasn't concerned with how much he's on the move. He's 29.5 inches long, and his head is still ginormous and in the 95th percentile. So basically, after one year, he's still tiny with a huge head. He hasn't grown out of being a Lovenox baby yet! The doctor said we should try to get him away from spoon feeding the purees, so we stopped giving him the one at night to see if he'll be hungry to eat more of the "grown up" foods. Like pieces of chicken instead of pureed chicken. Gross. I also bought a refillable/reusable pouch system so I can fill up pouches of applesauce and fruit baby foods. This is going to be way cheaper. Each pouch at the store is $2! I bought the reusable pouch system for $40, and I can get a big container of applesauce for way cheap. Plus, I can buy the containers of baby food and put those into pouches. Those containers are about $1.25 for two, so we're looking at a big cost savings. And it's environmentally friendly because I'm so green. Ha.
On Tuesday, Sandra (my aunt) brought Ryan (my almost three-year-old cousin) over to play. Hunter and Ryan are going to get in trouble together one day. And probably sooner rather than later. It was so fun to see them play together. They're great. Although Ryan is bossy as little kids are, so that was fun. Ryan never gets to boss, so he was having a good time! He would take Hunter's ball so they could play somewhere else, and Hunter would look at him like what the heck are you doing?! It was funny. Ryan also went over to the 52 pictures of Hunter on the wall, and was pointing at every single one saying, "This is baby Hunter, and this is baby Hunter, and this is baby Hunter crying, and this is baby Hunter." That kid cracks me up.
On Saturday, Hunter refused to take his morning nap. So after he screamed for about 20 minutes, I went in and got him so we could play more. I had to deliver a wedding cake, and Shamus was working snow, so my parents were planning to watch him in the afternoon. I was feeding him lunch, ooked over, and he was about 2 seconds away from being asleep! Right there in his high chair mid-bite. Crazy. So I rushed him over to their house (thank God they live 2 minutes away now!), and put him into his pack and play there. My mom texted me over three hours later asking if they should wake him up. What?? He hasn't taken a three-hour nap since he was just a couple of months old. I couldn't believe it! I asked if he was still breathing! Obviously he was or this would be a very different post! He must be growing!
